Aprendo inglés: Formas de usar TO TAKE

El verbo take  tiene varios usos y significados, que veremos hoy. Te recuerdo antes de empezar que la conjugación es take – took – taken.

Cómo usar el verbo TAKE en inglés:

take the bus/the train/a plane = tomar el autobús/tren/avión etc

Se usa take para llegar a un sitio en un modo de transporte, especialmente cuando hablamos del destino del viaje. Para hablar de donde nos subimos al autobús, usamos catch.

I’m taking a plane to Barcelona.

She’s taking a train to Paris.

He takes the bus to work every day.

BUT: I caught the bus at the stop near my house.

**Lo más difícil ahí es con el transporte. Pero normalmente catch se usa para hablar del momento de subirte al autobús (o lo que sea) y take se usa para todo el trayecto.

Take puede traducirse como “llevar”

take something somewhere = tomar algo y llevarlo a otro sitio

He took his suit to the cleaner’s.

She took the dog for a walk.

They took a bottle of wine to Charlie’s house.

Where did you take my dictionary?

Tomar medicina
take medicine = tomar medicina

Did you take your medicine this morning?

I took some painkillers because I have a headache. (Painkillers son analgésicos, o literalmente “matadolores”.)

The doctor told me to take these pills for a week.

La gran excepción: “tomar algo”

ATENCIÓN: tomar un café / te / cerveza etc = drink / have a coffee / tea / beer.

En este caso, no se usa el verbo take.

I had a coffee with Jenny yesterday. = Tomé un café…

They had a few beers after work yesterday. = Tomaron unas cervezas…

I can’t go with you. I’m having tea with my grandmother this afternoon. = Estoy tomando té…

Tomar algo = have a drink

Would you like to have a drink later?

I went to have a drink with Marta last night.

Si usas take con una bebida, suena que estás hablando de llevarlo a otro sitio, no de beberlo.

I took some beer to the party. (No la bebí necesariamente, sino que la acerqué a la fiesta.)

Con el famoso “tomar algo” se puede hacer estas frases en inglés:

Vamos a tomar algo? = Would you like to go for a drink?

Quieres tomar algo después de clase? = Would you like to have a drink after class?

Qué tomas? = What would you like to drink?

Normalmente tomas café o té? = Do you usually drink coffee or tea?

Fíjate que tampoco se dice drink something, porque el something en inglés suena a algo desconocido, misterioso y quizá peligroso. Decimos simplemente have a drink o go (out) for a drink.
